What do we really know about the birth of Christ?

Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, is not mentioned again after the birth? What happened to him?  Why is the lineage of Jesus part of the original birth narrative in the New Testament, but rarely if every talked about? Can a person living in the 21st Century still believe in a Virgin birth?
